Our Trip to Lesotho

Wow, having the opportunity to visit a neighbouring country during this past month as been an incredible journey. We originally planned to visit Cam's aunty, who has recently moved to the Natal Midlands - a quaint farming region a little drive from Durban.

This is very close to a small country within South Africa, Lesotho. The way to the borderr is up a very treacherous rocky 4x4 trail to the top which is over 3000m in altitude, and has winds like I've only ever experienced in Port Elizabeth (our home town).

We began the journey by driving through some farmlands, meeting an incredible dog who was guarding the sheep all by himself and getting to the top of the mountain, only to be told that we had to pay a fine (the passport control guy had a real sense of humour!). We reached the border on what was reasonably tarred or graveled roads which was easy. We hit the South African border at around 11am and I got a stamp in my new passport!

Now the tricky part comes when you have to drive a 8km route between the South African and the Lesotho border. And the catch is that you can only get there by 4x4. It took us around an hour and a half to get up those 8km's, but once we got to the top, WOW! What an experience. We saw the mountains drizzled with snow - a rare occurrence in South Africa.

After visiting the highest pub in Africa for a quick snack and something to drink, we headed just past the border and played a bit in the snow, before heading back down the mountain, back home.

Of everything on that trip (besides the apple crumble cheesecake with a butterscotch drizzle - a story for another day), it was an experience I'll never forget.

If ever you get the chance, you have to go up the Sani Pass to Lesotho!

Xoxo
